Makeen Yasar, B.S. (he/him), is a change agent, poet, and medical student attending Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (College of Medicine) in Los Angeles, CA as part of their inaugural class. Raised in Palmdale, CA, Yasar moved to LA to attend Loyola Marymount University where he earned his B.S. in Health and Human Sciences with a minor in African American Studies. Yasar seeks to become a Family Medicine physician to serve in the South-Central LA communities where his family roots originate from.
Yasar is currently a Social Mission Alliance Health Justice Fellow, a national program for health professions learners centered on social mission advocacy and institutional change. At CDU, Yasar serves as Co-President of his school’s Student National Medical Association (SNMA) chapter, as well as Mentorship and Advocacy Chair for CDU’s American Muslim Medical Student Association (AMMSA). Yasar serves as a community wellness lead for TRAP Medicine, a grassroots health organization dedicated to preventive health in South-Central LA, and has recently been selected as a 2024 National Medical Fellowship (NMF) Primary Care Leadership Program Scholar (PCLP).
Prior to matriculating in the CDU-MD program, Yasar was Coordinator for the Office of Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity at the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine, where he helped lead the development and management of the institution’s pathway initiatives and served as a project coordinator for inclusive programming. Before working in medical education, Yasar was an inaugural Youth Justice Fellow for the Brothers, Sons, Selves Coalition (BSS), where he led youth organizing work in community-based research analysis, advocacy, and justice centered campaign development alongside BIPOC youth.
