UNM School of Medicine
Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States
Derek Lin, MPH recently began his journey as a medical student at UNMSOM. HIs path is marked by a diverse array of experiences that have sculpted his vision for his future as a physician. Starting as a math and science teacher for children with learning differences after graduating from UC Santa Cruz, Derek found fulfillment in empowering individuals to overcome obstacles and pursue their dreams. This passion for empowerment led him to research at the NM VA Hospital, where he delved into the relationship between dietary factors and health, focusing on interventions accessible to all.
As his understanding of health disparities deepened through studies in public health at UNM, Derek transitioned into advocacy, fighting for children's rights to essential needs like food, housing, and healthcare at NM Voices for Children. His contributions didn't stop there; his research on language access gaps paved the way for significant legislative changes, ensuring multilingual communities in New Mexico received vital support.
Throughout his journey, Derek has remained committed to his core values of empowerment and advocacy. He envisions a future in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, where he can continue to champion his patients' rehabilitation journeys, enabling them to lead fulfilling lives post-hospitalization.
