Lwiza Escobar Garcia is a community engagement leader with 10+ years’ experience driving infant and children’s mental health and public health impact in historically marginalized communities. She specializes in building connections and collaborating with Latino-led and Latino-serving groups to strengthen community engagement efforts, increasing advocacy, and advancing health equity.
Since a young age she wondered about the inequity she saw in her neighborhood in housing, education, and health. This curiosity led to work in underserved communities where the interconnectedness of social determinants of health and other markers that can change the course of person’s life could be easily observed.
Becoming a parent birthed a new area of curiosity around early childhood development, protective factors, and changing what has been passed down from generation to generation. At Power of Two, Lwiza established relationships with foster care agencies in the Bronx and through collaborative exchanges created a strategic plan that allowed Power of Two to train over 600 foster care staff on program deliverables, referral process, and attachment theory.
At the onset of the COVID 19 pandemic, Lwiza and her family relocated to NC from NYC. During this time of need, she was able to join the emergency efforts at Wake County supporting their strategic planning, delivering community engagement campaigns, educational programs, and bridging resources to deliver comprehensive services for the most vulnerable residents of Wake County.
Currently Lwiza is serving at WakeMed Health and Hospitals as a Case Manager – Social Worker, utilizing her skills as a systems thinker and consensus builder to serve people in the community and develop the Health Equity plan for the Center for Community Health as well. Lwiza has two little ones five and under and when she isn’t fighting for health equity she’s losing an argument to her five year old.
