Erin Fraher PhD MPP is a Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and an internationally recognized expert on health workforce research and policy. She is Deputy Director for Policy and Director of the Carolina Health Workforce Research Center (CHWRC) at the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research focuses on graduate medical education, interprofessional teams in new models of care, developing rigorous methodologies to project how many health workers will be needed under different possible “futures,” and using life course theory to better understand health professionals’ career trajectories. Dr. Fraher’s research has generated substantial interest from state and federal policy makers. She is often called upon to brief Congressional staff and members, the Health Resources and Services Administration, state governors, state legislatures and other public and private sector leaders on health workforce issues. She is well known for her ability to communicate complex research findings in ways that are easily understood and policy-relevant. Dr. Fraher is an expert on comparative health workforce systems, having worked for the National Health Service in England, the Ministry of Health in New Zealand, the College of Nurses of Ontario and served for many years as a member of the International Health Workforce Collaborative, a consortium of health workforce researchers/policy analysts in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Australia.
