Davis Patterson, PhD, is a sociologist and Research Associate Professor in the University of Washington (UW) Department of Family Medicine in Seattle, Washington. His research seeks to inform policy and improve rural and under-resourced populations’ access to health care. He is Director of the WWAMI Rural Health Research Center (RHRC), funded by HRSA since 1988. The WWAMI RHRC’s mission is to improve and sustain rural health through research that engages policymakers, planners, and practitioners advancing equity in rural access to care. He is also Deputy Director, Health Equity, of the HRSA-funded UW Center for Health Workforce Studies, which conducts research in two focus areas: (1) the allied health workforce and (2) health workforce diversity as well as preparation, and deployment of the workforce to achieve health equity. Dr. Patterson was Director of the Collaborative for Rural Primary care Research, Education, and Practice (Rural PREP), a six-year project also funded by HRSA to conduct research and build a community of practice by improving the education and training of rural primary care teams. Dr. Patterson’s recent research includes studies on rural training for physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants; the behavioral health workforce; rural access to specialty care; preparation of rural family physicians in obstetrics; the emergency medical services workforce; and immigrants in health occupations. He is a member of the International Health Workforce Collaborative and immediate past chair of AcademyHealth’s Health Workforce Interest Group. He is a returned Peace Corps Volunteer (Belize), an avid traveler, and fluent in Spanish.
