Victor J. Dzau is President of the National Academy of Medicine, Vice Chair of the National Research Council, and Chancellor Emeritus and former CEO of Duke University Health System and James B. Duke Distinguished Professor of Medicine. Previously, he was Professor and Chairman of Medicine at both Harvard and Stanford Universities He has received numerous honors, including 18 honorary doctorates.
Dzau is recognized globally for a long and highly decorated career as a scientist, administrator, and leader. He is known for his seminal work on the renin–angiotensin system and pioneering research in gene therapy for vascular disease. His research laid the foundation for development of lifesaving drugs known as ACE inhibitors, used globally to treat high blood pressure and congestive heart failure.
As a leader of academic medicine, he advanced the concept of “Discovery to Care Continuum” in 2010, which became widely accepted as the model for academic medicine for the past decade. Implementing this vision at Duke, Dzau was a pivotal force in founding Duke–National University of Singapore Medical School, the Duke Global Health Institute, Duke Institute for Health Innovation, Duke Cancer Institute, and Duke Translational Medicine Institute. Recently, he extended this concept of academic medicine to “Bench to Bedside to Population to Society” to integrate care delivery with population health and addressing socioeconomic and environmental determinants.
As a visionary leader, Dzau has set an inspiring example, developing initiatives to transform and improve healthcare locally and globally. He believes health and science leaders should develop solutions to broad-reaching social challenges. At NAM, he leads a strategy of innovation and equity. Under his tenure, the NAM has launched important initiatives including Global Health Risk Framework, Global Roadmap for Healthy Longevity, Human Gene Editing Initiative; Confronting the Opioid Crisis; and Grand Challenge in Climate Change and Health.
