Dr. Eleanor Fleming (she/her/hers) is a scholar with multidisciplinary academic training in African American Studies, Political Science, Dentistry, and Epidemiology. Her work is rooted in antiracist and intersectional frameworks, and she brings these lenses to her scholarship and practice. A board-certified public health dentist, Eleanor is the Assistant Dean for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry with a Clinical Associate Professor appointment in the Department of Dental Public Health.
In her research, she advocates for diversity science in oral health research, practice, policy, and education. Her current research interests are justice-centered, focused on workforce diversity, the impacts of structural racism, and improving oral health outcomes at a population-level. Her work has been published in such journals as The Journal of Dental Research, Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology, and The Journal of Public Health Dentistry.
An active member of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry, the Hispanic Dental Association, the National Dental Association, and the Society of American Indian Dentistry, she is unapologetic Black and intentionally antiracist. Inspired by James Baldwin, because she chose to become a dentist and respects the profession, she offers critique to hold it and ourselves accountable to the principle of justice stated in dentistry’s code of ethics.
